Comment: Samuel Joshua Cooper (1830-1913), a local benefactor and linen manufacturer, was the son of a local colliery owner. In 1912 he purchased the old Holgate Grammar School in Church Street with the intention of creating an art gallery for the people of Barnsley. In February 1913, just before his death, the Cooper Gallery Trust was established to administer the new gallery. He bequeathed 275 paintings to the Trust, the bulk of his collection, except for two works which were donated to the National Gallery. [1]
The Trust's permanent collection is formed almost entirely from the gifts of four benefactors to their home town; Cooper himself, Sir Michael Sadler, Thomas Fox and Roland Addy" [2]
