Below the king on horseback: "GODFREY OF BOUILLON". This is a copy in relief of the equestrian statue of Godfrey of Bouillon in Place Royale, Brussels, by Louis-Eugène Simonis (1848) For comparison see < http://shimmer.shu.
> . Comment: Samuel Swift carved the panels while he was still an apprentice. They are now housed in the retaining wall opposite Lion Cottage and are privately owned. Two are copies of paintings by J.F.Herring, an artist with local connections. SWIFT also carved the "alabaster reredos of Cawthorne Church, the statue of Paulinus over the North Porch door of the same church, and the statue of John Wesley, which is over the door of Cawthrne Methodist Church." [1] J.F.Herring himself was discovered by his patron, Rev Stanhope, whilst driving the mail coach from Doncaster.
