Description:
Location: George's Yard, Barnsley Town Centre. Description: A fence made up of panels to separate a car parking area from the rest of the yard. Each panel has an upper and lower half. The lower contains motifs taken from the carved beehive above the door of the cafe opposite, these incorporate honeycomb elements and bees. The upper half is based upon a weaving theme of waft and weft; a reference to the work carried out in an adjacent warehouse. Three taller sections of the fence contain lockable display cases in which artwork is to be shown. Each is topped with a beehive in stainless steel. Commission: Funded by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and Yorkshire Forward. Owned by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. Made by Mayflower Engineering of Sheffield. Comment: According to the artist: "The top weave section relates to an old linen warehouse close by the site, while the hives and bees are taken from architectural details on a building opposite the screen."
