Detail: inscription. Location: In the churchyard of All Saints' Church, Darfield, Barnsley Description: A tall obelisk mounted on a pedestal and base, resting on two steps, located at the edge of the churchyard above a slope to the River Dearne. Each face of the plinth has an outstanding inscribed surface. Above the upper lip of the plinth there is a small floral wreath and scroll on each side of the monument. Inscriptions: There are biblical texts on all four faces of the plinth; the front of the monument also contains the following: "ERECTED / TO COMMEMORATE THE / LUNDHILL EXPLOSION / OF FEBRUARY 19TH 1857, / IN WHICH / ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY NINE / MEN AND BOYS LOST THEIR LIVES; / OF WHOSE BODIES, / ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY SIX / ARE BURIED / NEAR THIS PLACE. / "PREPARE TO MEET THY GOD." / AMOS.IV.12." Inscriptions on the other faces are: " "THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST HIS / SON CLEANSETH US FROM ALL SIN" / JOHN.I.7. " " "IF WE BELIEVE THAT JESUS DIED / AND ROSE AGAIN, EVEN SO THEM / ALSO WHICH SLEEP IN JESUS WILL / GOD BRING WITH HIM." / 1 THESSALONIANS.IV.14. " " "HOW SHALL WE ESCAPE IF WE / NEGLECT SO GREAT SALVATION?" / HEBREWS.II.3. " On the horizontal surface of one of the steps is the signature: " W. OXLEY of Barnsley" Commission: Commemorates the Lund Hill Explosion of 1857, when 189 men and boys were killed. Comment: Recently (2007) restored and cleaned.
