Description:
View of sculpture outside the front of the school. Location: Herringthorpe Valley Road. St Bernard's RC Comprehensive School, S65 3BE Description: A monk holding a child aloft in his arms. The robe and body of the monk are shown in bold sweeping lines and planes; the monk's head and the child are depicted more naturalistically. The child is in a crucified position with a nail through its feet. The statue stands near the entrance to the school and is clearly visible from the road. Inscription: On rear of statue at its base: J.B 1968 Commission: No details. Comment: John Bunting wrote an article for The Catholic Herald entitled "Thoughts for a statue of St. Bernard" in which he discusses the life and character of the Saint. He says "Stone is the medium the Cistertian spirit most respected and also the physical labour of carving it." He also quotes the following advice given by St Bernard to Abbot Aelred of Rievaulx Abbey. " "With that hammer of yours you may cut out of those rocks what you would not find by your native sagacity in the libraries of professors: and" (he adds, less strenuously) "not seldom in the mid-day heat you will be aware, under the shade of the trees. of something that you would never have learned in the schools." " St Bernard was born in Burgundy in 1090/1 and died at Clairvaux in 1153. Canonised in 1170, his emblems are a pen, bees and instruments of the Passion. A second work, a Madonna & Child, was made for the interior of the school. This was not popular and is now in Our Lady & St Thomas' RC Church, Meadowhead, Sheffield. [2] References: Obituary: The Catholic Herald "Ampleforth pays tribute to a man of rare talent" December 13, 2002 p.6 [1] The Catholic Herald entitled "Thoughts for a statue of St. Bernard" August 22, 1969 p.3 [2] Information received from Dr Paul Walker.
