Description:
Detail: Left side of the Memorial - the low wall is embellished with reliefs showing vehicles taking supplies and men to and from the front line. The Memorial was inaugurated on May 14, 1967 by General Boucaud. Location: Moulin Brule, 55120 Nixéville-Blercourt - 3 km from Verdun. The 'Sacred Road' marks the only supply road able to reach Verdun during the height of the WW1 conflict here in 1916. It became known as the 'Sacred Road' after 1922. The Memorial was built to commemorate the work of the Road Transport Service, over 8,000 of whose men worked ceaselessly to keep the road open during the fighting. The road brought supplies and men to the front-line with a vehicle travelling every ten seconds, 24 hours a day, between February and December 1916. Inaugurated May 14, 1967 by General Boucaud.
