Exterior view: Bench outside the Winter gardens (not visible, left). View looking between the Novotel and City Lofts from the Winter Gardens. The City Lofts buildings (right), were not completed until 2010. The Novotel was built by John SEIFERT ARCHITECTS (1991). (Sheffield Hallam University's Stoddart Building just visible in the background) Artworks, titled 'Rain', are by Colin ROSE, 2006. Description of artworks: 9 polished stainless steel balls of different sizes, each set in a small pool. Water constantly flows over them to create a smooth, faintly rippled, surface. LED lights in the rim of the pools illuminate them at night. The largest ball is 2 metres high. Commission: Sheffield City Council. Part of the 'Heart of the City' regeneration scheme. Funding came from the Millennium Commission. The first sculptures were installed on 25 November 2005 The square was formally opened on Saturday 18 March 2006 by Jan Wilson, Leader of Sheffield City Council. The ceremony was followed by 3 hours of street entertainment including music, theatre, juggling and stilt walkers.
