Description:
Initial drawings exhibited in the Ruskin Gallery, 1996. Location: Near the top of Fargate. The planters are level with Norfolk Row. (A-Z p.5 3E) [Update] They have been moved to a space just to the south of Sheffield Hallam University Students' Union (the old Museum of Popular Music building) on Paternoster Row (2005-) Description: The planters resemble crucibles or casting boxes from steel works. Commission: Sheffield City Council as part of the Metal Heaven Project. Funding for this project came from a variety of sources: the Crafts Council; the European Community; Sheffield Hallam University; Yorkshire and Humberside Arts; Arts and Museums, Leisure Services, Sheffield; Sheffield City Council and the Foundation for sport and the arts. Project initiated by the City's Public Art Officer. Comment: With both sets of planters it will be wise to wait until the plants in them have developed to see what the finished product will look like. People can often be seen sitting on the small semi-circular protrusions on the outside of the Planters. Notes from Council records: the discs/flanges that protrude from the main planters are intended as seats. Planters sit on concrete ring. Fabricated by 'Sheffield Artmetal'. Reference: Council records; 'Metal Heaven Project' file - notes taken by Darcy White May 2001.
