Description:
|
Interior view: The Penguin Pool. A revolving fountain keeps the ramps wet. The flat paths coated in plastic rubber and steps are made of slate. [photographed in the 1960's] The pool is no longer thought a suitable place for keeping penguins, but as a listed building Grade 1 must remain in the zoo, although it is now unoccupied. The pool was listed in 1970 and restored in 1988. The building in the distance is the Elephant House (Sir Hugh CASSON, 1962-5) - also no longer used for its original purpose.
