Description:
View across the curve of the site to the Sheaf Building. Dyson House (now demolished) in the background. Location: Entrance to Sheffield Hallam University City Campus from Sheaf Street, opposite Sheffield Midland Station. (A-Z p. 5 4F/G) Description: A semi-circular piazza in two parts, one consisting of steps, the other a wide ramp measured by red concentric bands meeting the circular pattern of the steps. Fine stainless steel insets and a cluster of small trees to one side of the ramp indicate the entrance to the piazza. The top of this area leads to the pedestrian route into the City Campus and is marked by the 'Concourse Gates' by Amanda King and Chris Twiss. Commission: Sheffield Hallam University, realised by Shepherd Design and Build. Sheffield City Council. Comment: Linear Park was designed in terms of hard and soft landscaping. Only the hard landscape is in place. An elevation study shows the red colour theme of the soft landscape, which was planned for an area to one side of the piazza. Unfortunately it was subsequently realised that the species of predominantly red trees planned for the soft area were not suitable for the centre of Sheffield. The climate is not cold enough during the winter to stimulate growth in the trees. The soft area, for which the City of Sheffield is responsible, will not therefore be realised as the artists had planned. Update (2005): Major re-developments of the area around the Railway Station and the old Student Union building at Sheffield Hallam University threaten the existance of this area. It is unclear at this stage exactly how it will be affected.
