Description:
|
Detail: centrepiece of the sculpture.
Location: On the slope below the western end of Drakehouse Lane West, Beighton. The sculpture overlooks the prominent roundabout on Eckington Way (B6053). (A-Z p. 115 4F) Description: A plinth faced in granite on which is a large circular stainless steel circle, 2.5 m in diameter, supported by two feet on either side. Within the circle is a star of steel inset with eight triangles of bronze; the central circle is also infilled with bronze. These bronze sections are decorated with images in relief, those on the rear of the sculpture are obviously the work of children. The central section on the front of the sculpture contains 2 miner's helmets, a horse shoe, a brick, the tines of a fork, an anvil, a hand bell and a vaporiser. The compass points contain a total of 85 images of people and activities in Beighton made by local people. Items of note include a horse made by Ted Singleton, retired ploughman, who used to work the fields on which the monument now stands. Inscriptions: There are numerous inscriptions set into the images on the front and rear of the piece which identify the images in which they are placed. eg. BMWMVC: (for Beighton Miners Welfare Male Voice Choir) next to images of a miner's helmet, pick and shovel; and also a musical stave. REDDISH / BEIGHTON: on an image of a brick. "By the Sea": next to an image of a person rowing a boat. Commission: Project managed by Eventus, Workstation, Sheffield on behalf of Full Circle, a creative environment and heritage project managed by Eventus in partnership with Beighton Villages Development Trust. The Public Art Consultant was James Copp. Funding from Objective 1 (Priority 4b former coal and steel communities) Sources: Interviews with the artist and Clare McManus from Eventus |
