Description:
Location: Pond Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Plans and designs for the Regional College of Art. Front elevation. Taken from a local newspaper. There are similarities in style between this design and the Art College built beside Barnsley Town Hall. The text beneath this drawing reads: "THE FINE FRONTAGE of the proposed new Arts College, seen from Pond Street. The recommendation that the college should be built on the site between Arundel Street and Pond Street is another development of yesterday's meeting of the Town Planning Committee. The site was originally choisen for the Assize Courts. " The recommendation to reserve the Pond Street site, now vacant, for the city's motor bus station means, of course, that the new Arts College would overlook the bus station. The Committee state that the Pond Street site may be used for a bus station only if the wholesale fruit, vegetable, and fish markets are moved to a site between Duke Street and Lord Street." [A copy of this plan is available in the University's Special Collection]
