Description:
Detail: Hop sculpture. In the background there is a housing redevelopment on the Ward's Brewery site. Location: Summerfield Street. Description: Two, 1 metre high, stainless steel sculptures set on gateposts, one of a hop the other a sheaf of barley. These are constructed of numerous transections fixed to a central pole. The inner surfaces of the sections of the barley sheaf are decorated with designs based on ears of barley which add interesting detail to the piece. Commission: J.F.Finnegan Ltd. who redeveloped the site. Comment: A second piece, 'Hop Sculpture', also designed by Johnson, is sited at the front entrance to the site on Ecclesall Road. Although this was conceived as part of the same project as 'Hop and Sheaf of Barley' it is quite different and more naturalistic in style.
