Description:
|
View from the memorial with the ridge over which the attack was made. The plinth has carved badges of the 38th Division and the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. When the photograph was taken two coachloads of tourists were visiting the site - accessed over tracks across farmland. This memorial was made from Welsh steel, in a furnace fired by South Wales coal, mounted on a Forest of Dean sandstone plinth. The dragon taken from the badge of the 38th Division. The Attack on Mametz Wood, July 7-14, 1916 took place at the beginning of the Battle of the Somme. It is sited in the middle of farmland below the crest of ridge looking over a shallow valley to the edge of the Mametz Wood.
