Description:
Location: High Street. Detail view of this gateway sculpture. Commission: Part of Phase 1 of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council 'Quality Streets Project' (1997-1998). The project is part-financed by the European Community and by the Government's Challenge Fund through the Single Regeneration Budget. Project budget: £50,000. [1] The Portland stone came from Albion Stone Quarries Limited. [2] Horsley was chosen after an international competition. The commission brief was to create an formal gateway entrance into the town. Comment: Doncaster's origins lie in its role as a Roman camp. The entrance to a Roman military fort was marked by spears stuck into the ground and lit fires. This piece echoes those themes. Gillot Bar is the name of the original mediaeval gate which stood on this site. References: [1] James Copp document: "List of projects - 1990-1999" [2] http://www.albionst
