Description:
Sited near the junction with High Street. 'Made in Metal Heaven' is a project in which 5 metalwork pieces were made and installed in Sheffield City Centre. 6 craftworkers produced ideas for each site. These sketches were used to select which artist would work on which site. The last piece was completed and installed at the beginning of 1998. Location: Fargate, near junction with High Street. Description: The screen looks a little bit like a strung out necklace, according to the artist the details have been cast from dog biscuits and was intended as a tribute to her dog who died during the project - his name is stamped on each piece. It stands about 2m high and is sited in two quarter-circular curves, which meet to form a narrow throughway. Commission: Sheffield City Council as part of the Metal Heaven Project. Funding for this project came from a variety of sources: the Crafts Council; the European Community; Sheffield Hallam University; Yorkshire and Humberside Arts; Arts and Museums, Leisure Services, Sheffield; Sheffield City Council and the Foundation for sport and the arts. Project initiated by the City's Public Art Officer. Comment: Manufactured by Darren Richardson involving a process of hand forging and lost wax methods. The artist, Jennie Gill, who works primarily as a jeweler, likes to take non-precious objects and cast them in silver and gold. The screen was sometimes used as a bicycle rack by a lone cyclist. Update: The screen was removed from Fargate in 2005. There are no plans to re-install it or site it elsewhere. References: [1] note taken from Council records by Darcy White, May 2001.
