Description:
Exterior detail: view of the panel. Location: A carved panel above the entrance of Lloyds TSB building 47-48 High Street, DN1 1UR. On the corner of High Street and Priory Place. Description: The panel shows eight figures in relief. The central female figure, in long flowing robes, faces out of the panel holding what appear to be bags of coins to her chest. To her right a smaller figure offers a similar bag to a workman with a hammer and his wife, while on her other side a similar figure does the same to an elderly man with a stick, a woman with her head covered and a small child with a dog at its heels who stands in front of them. Commission: The building used to be National Provincial Bank. It was originally on the other side of the road to new premises '(formerly the sites of the Union of London and Smith's Bank, Limited), as from Monday 10th December, 1923' [1] Comment: The subject matter seems on first glance to be emphasizing a philanthropic facet of the bank's activities. In the 1870's Charles Mabey worked as a sculptor for John Gibson, architect to the National Provincial Bank. His son, of the same name carried on the business into the 20th Century. [2] Mabey carved the relief on the Corn Exchange in Doncaster. References: [1] Doncaster Gazette, 7 December 1923. Advertisement. [2] PMSA Biographies. Vol 1-4. File in RAC - Sources: S. Beattie, The New Sculpture, New Haven and London, 1983
