Description:
General view. Location: On grass by the roadside at Philadelphia Open Space, Upperthorpe, Sheffield S10. The sofa is placed so that you look out over the Don Valley when seated. Description: A lifesize concrete sofa sited on the top of a bank looking out towards Sheffield Ski Slopes. The back of the sofa is decorated with faces in relief. The front face of the arms and the front base of the seat are decorated with thems from the natural world. Models were made in clay and then cast in concrete. Inscriptions: An inscription written in the side of the sofa states: "JULY 1998 / MADE BY THE FRIDAY NIGHT / GROUP AT THE HILL YOUTH / CENTRE WORKING WITH / THE ARTIST ROSS GILBERTSON / PART OF THE / PAVING THE WAY PROJECT / SUPPORTED BY / BT COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMME / THE SHEFFIELD SRD PARTNERSHIP EUROPEAN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUND / AND DESTINATION SHEFFIELD" Commission: by 'Paving the Way' with funding from the Single Regeneration Budget. Supported by BT in the Community, the European Development Fund and Destination Sheffield. The brief involved working with young people from the Hill Youth Work Base, located in this part of Sheffield. Comment: Officially opened by Lord and Lady Mayoress of Sheffield on 14th July 1998. Other pieces opened the same day were made by Johnny White and Amanda Wray, Gillian Brent and Mandy Burton
