Description:
View of the sculptural relief. Location: On the gable end of the Ellen Carter Almshouses facing Totley Brook Road. At the junction between Totley Brook Road and Bushey Wood Road. Description: A carved stone panel showing, in relief, an angel blowing a trumpet. A plaque on the Bushey Wood Road façade reads: "ALMS HOUSES, / IN MEMORY / OF / ELLEN CARTER / 1900." Commission: The almshouses were built to commemorate the mother of Christopher Carter, a director of Carter, Milner and Bird; the Sheffield brewery company, which made Jubilee Stout, and which was eventually taken into the Bass group. Each director contributed £1000 towards the cost of the almshouses. [1] Comment: The descendants of Christopher Carter still maintain the three almshouses which were originally intended for workers of Carter, Milner and Bird who were in need.
